County That Handles Urban Honolulu Records
Urban Honolulu falls within Honolulu County, which is part of Hawaii's First Judicial Circuit. All family court filings for Urban Honolulu go through the First Circuit, with the Kapolei Courthouse serving as the main family court hub. This includes records for divorce, paternity, child support, termination of parental rights, and juvenile matters.
Honolulu County is unique in Hawaii because it spans the entire island of Oahu plus several smaller island groups. As a result, the First Circuit handles more family court cases than any other circuit in the state. Records from cases filed in the First Circuit are stored and managed through the Kapolei Judiciary Complex, though public access terminals are available at Ka'ahumanu Hale in downtown Honolulu during regular court hours.
How to Find Urban Honolulu Family Court Records
There are several ways to look up family court records for Urban Honolulu. The fastest method is using eCourt Kokua, the Hawaii Judiciary's free online case search tool. It is available 24 hours a day and lets you search by name, case ID, or citation number. Basic case information, including party names, hearing dates, and case status, is free to view.
For older family court civil cases, Ho'ohiki is the dedicated database covering filings from 1983 to the present. You can search by name, case ID, or by filtering on circuit, case type, and year. This system is especially useful if you know the approximate year a case was filed but don't have the full case number.
In-person lookups are available at Ka'ahumanu Hale, 777 Punchbowl Street. Public access computer terminals are open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Bring a photo ID. For certified copies or full document sets, you will need to submit a request to the Legal Documents Branch at Kapolei.
Note: Case information on eCourt Kokua and Ho'ohiki is updated every evening, so very recent filings may not appear until the next business day.
Accessing and Copying Records
The Legal Documents Branch at the Kapolei Courthouse handles requests for copies of court documents. The branch can be reached at (808) 954-8310, with fax at (808) 954-8333. Mail requests go to: Legal Documents Branch, Ronald T.Y. Moon Judiciary Complex, 4675 Kapolei Parkway, Kapolei, HI 96707-3272.
Document copy fees are set statewide. A copy of 1 to 30 pages costs $3. Certified copies cost an additional $2 on top of the base fee. If you do not know the case number, a name search fee of $5 applies. For mail requests, allow at least 10 business days for processing. In-person requests at the documents counter are typically faster.
You can view records for free at the public access terminals. Printing from those terminals may have a per-page charge. Bring the case number if you have it. Staff can help you locate a case if you only have a name and approximate year.

Types of Family Court Records in Urban Honolulu
Family court records in Urban Honolulu cover a broad range of legal matters. The First Circuit Family Court handles divorce cases, which include property division, spousal support, and related financial filings. Child custody and visitation orders are filed here, as are petitions for adoption and guardianship. Domestic violence temporary restraining orders are also a major part of the family court docket.
Other record types include paternity actions, child support orders, termination of parental rights cases, and juvenile matters such as status offenses and delinquency proceedings. Adoption records, records involving minors, and child welfare case files are typically sealed under Hawaii law and are not available to the general public through standard records requests. Public Records and Privacy
Hawaii's Uniform Information Practices Act (UIPA), found in HRS Chapter 92F, governs public access to government records, including court filings. Under HRS §571-11, the family court has jurisdiction over a wide range of matters, and records from most of these cases are public. The court must respond to a record request within 10 business days under HRS §92F-11.
That said, not everything is open. Records sealed by court order, records involving adoption, records related to child abuse or neglect, and most juvenile records are not available to the public. If you believe a record you need is sealed, you may need to file a motion with the court to request access. An attorney can help you understand whether a sealed record can be unsealed in your case.
