East Honolulu Family Court

East Honolulu is a large community that includes Hawaii Kai, Aina Haina, Kuliouou, and other neighborhoods on the southeastern coast of Oahu. Despite its size, East Honolulu does not have its own family court. All family law filings for the area go through the Ronald T.Y. Moon Kapolei Courthouse at 4675 Kapolei Parkway, Kapolei, HI 96707, phone (808) 954-8000. From Hawaii Kai, the drive to Kapolei is roughly 30 minutes under normal traffic conditions.

Some East Honolulu residents, particularly those on the Windward side of the Ko'olau Range, may find the Kaneohe District Court more accessible for certain matters. That court, at 45-939 Pookela Street, Kaneohe, HI 96744, (808) 534-6300, handles traffic violations, misdemeanor cases, and some civil matters for the Windward area. Family law matters such as divorce, custody, and adoption must still go to Kapolei.

County That Handles East Honolulu Records

East Honolulu is part of Honolulu County, which encompasses the entire island of Oahu. All family court records for East Honolulu addresses are filed and stored under the First Judicial Circuit. The Kapolei Judiciary Complex serves as the centralized hub for family court filings across Honolulu County, including cases from Hawaii Kai and other East Honolulu communities.

Because Honolulu County covers such a large area, the First Circuit handles more family court cases than any other circuit in Hawaii. Records are stored at Kapolei, but public access terminals at Ka'ahumanu Hale, 777 Punchbowl Street in downtown Honolulu, let people view case information without traveling to Kapolei. Those terminals are open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays.

The best place to start is eCourt Kokua, the Hawaii Judiciary's free online case search system. It is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You can search by name, case number, or citation number. Basic case data, including party names, case type, and hearing dates, is free to view online.

The Ho'ohiki system covers family court civil cases from 1983 to the present. If you are looking for a divorce or custody case from the past few decades, Ho'ohiki lets you filter by circuit, case type, and year. This is helpful if you know roughly when a case was filed but don't have the case number.

For older records or cases that are not fully available online, in-person access is the next step. Public access terminals at Ka'ahumanu Hale in downtown Honolulu are open during court hours. Bring a photo ID and the case number if you have it. Staff can assist with basic searches by name.

Note: Records involving minors, adoption proceedings, and sealed case files are not available through public search tools and require a court order to access.

Accessing and Copying Records

To get copies of East Honolulu family court documents, contact the Legal Documents Branch at the Kapolei Courthouse. Phone: (808) 954-8310. Fax: (808) 954-8333. Mail requests go to: Legal Documents Branch, Ronald T.Y. Moon Judiciary Complex, 4675 Kapolei Parkway, Kapolei, HI 96707-3272.

Document copy fees apply statewide. Copies of 1 to 30 pages cost $3. Certified copies add $2 to that fee. A name search costs $5 if you do not know the case number. Mail requests take at least 10 business days to process. In-person requests at the counter are often faster.

For historical records that predate the current court filing system, the Hawaii State Archives may have relevant materials. The Archives are located at 364 S. King Street, Honolulu, HI 96813, phone (808) 586-0329. They hold older government records and may have materials related to family court cases from earlier decades.

Types of Family Court Records

Family court records in the First Circuit cover a wide range of case types. East Honolulu residents file cases involving divorce, legal separation, and annulment. Child custody, visitation, and child support orders are among the most common filings. Adoption petitions and guardianship applications are filed here too.

Domestic violence temporary restraining orders are a significant part of the family court docket. If you are looking for a TRO filed against a family or household member, those records are in the First Circuit system. Paternity actions, termination of parental rights cases, and juvenile matters such as delinquency or status offenses also fall under family court jurisdiction under HRS ยง571-11. Some juvenile records are sealed by law and are not available to the public.
